RoHS / Lead-Free Services and Compliance

What is RoHS?

The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) is European Union (EU) law since February 2003, and mandates that any products sold into Europe beginning July 1, 2006 be free of lead and five other hazardous substances, including mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, and two specific fire retardant chemicals.

What are the implications for electronic assemblies?

The vast majority of electrical and electronic components have historically utilized tin-lead alloys in the soldering and plating processes. Since lead can no longer be used in RoHS compliant products, all materials need to be specified and sourced with RoHS compliant materials, and manufacturing processes and controls need to be updated to RoHS compliance.

How can Winland help?

Winland has been working diligently since 2005 to develop internal processes and procedures necessary to ensure total compliance with the numerous RoHS provisions. Some of the services provided to help you meet the directive include: Bills of Material conversions to compliant components, material inventory monitoring for minimal exposure during change over, and certifications of our lead-free manufacturing processes.
